At approx. 7:10 pm the St. Stephens and Hickory Fire Departments responded to a report of a Structure Fire on Steve Ikard Drive in the Catawba Springs subdivision. An off duty batallion chief with the Hickory Fire Dept. arrived on the scene first to find heavy fire coming from the rear and roof of the structure. Due to the heavy fire involvement of the residence, a defensive attack was called right away. St. Stephens Engine 45 was the first apparatus on the scene and streched a 5" supply line from a nearby hydrant to the fire. The apparatus is equiped with an arial ladder which was put into service immediatly along with several 1 1/2" and 1 2 1/2" preconnected lines. St. Stephens Engine 41 was second in and another 5" supply line was stretched from Engine 45 to Engine 41 where several more 1 1/2" and 2 1/2" preconnected lines were placed into service. Engine 41 is equiped with a CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) and started applying water and foam to the fire almost immediatly. The Hickory Fire Department responded with 2 Engines and 1 Ladder company to the scene. Upon arrival all crews were put to work to assist in containing the blaze. The St. Stephens and Hickory Fire Departments respond together in this area due to the subdivision being spot annexed into the city limits. The two departments have a mutual aid agreement to respond together inside areas anexed outside of the city limits of Hickory. The blaze was brought under control in about 25 minutes. All occupants of the residence escaped without harm and the fire is currently under investigation.
