At approximately 12:42 am on February 16, 2008, units were dispatched to smoke coming from a building at 3150 Highland Avenue NE. The call came from Catawba County Sherriffs officers who responded to the building for a burglar alarm to find smoke coming from the building. Fire units were dispatched and first arriving units found smoke showing and attempted an interior attack but were forced out of the building and into a defensive attack. A second alarm was called for and also an engine and manpower from Conover Fire. Multiple 2 1/2" master streams and an aerial master stream were put into place by St. Stephens and mutuail aid companies to extinguish the fire. Firefighters worked into the early morning hours to bring the fire under control and begin salvage and overhaul operations. Multiple mutual aid companies were called upon to assist with suppression operations and district cover up. All operations were completed by lunch time the next day and there were no injuries to firefighters. The St. Stephens Fire Dept. would like to thank all agencies involved for their help. This fire is under investigation by the Catawba County Fire Marshalls Office.
