On Sunday June 12th 2011, units were dispatched to an address off of 44th Ave. Dr. NE for what was thought to be a vehicle submerged in Lake Hickory. A neighbor advised they had seen the object in the water for a couple of months but did not know what it was. It wasn't until the neighbor got a submersible camera and deployed it in the water he found out that he had been seeing a vehicle. He advised Catawba County Communications that he saw what appeared to be a steering wheel and white letters on the tires and told them he thought there was a vehicle in the water. A boat from Sherrills Ford Terrell Fire and Rescue along with divers was dispatched to the scene to use sonar equipment to locate the vehicle. The neighbor who spotted what he thought was a vehicle deployed a buoy over the area and Sherrills Ford Marine 1 confirmed that it was a vehicle after divers entered the water. The vehicle was found approx. 45 feet off the bank adjacent to a vacant lot at the end of 44th Ave. Dr. NE. Skeets wrecker service was called in to remove the vehicle with assistance from Sherrills Ford divers. The vehicle was removed from the lake just as an approaching storm unleashed. The owner of the vehicle and how it got into the lake are unknown at this time. St. Stephens Fire Department would like to thank all agencies involved.
