* ST. STEPHENS HISTORY *

The St. Stephens Fire Department has been "Dedicated to Superior Service" and has proudly served the St. Stephens community for over 50 years. St. Stephens Fire Department was established and chartered in the year of 1957. St. Stephens volunteers started responding to emergency calls in 1958. The first St. Stephens Fire Department was a storage garage that housed two fire trucks. This station was located behind the old Shell's Bar B-Q, a very popular eating establishment located a couple of blocks from our current Station 1. Fred Shell, a charter member and our first Chief, owned Shell's and decided it would be a good place for the first station. In 1967 the members of St. Stephens Fire Department built a new fire station that housed four fire apparatus. In 1996 a second station was built and two more fire apparatus were added to the fleet. This station was built to provide better fire response and better insurance ratings to the residence's of the lower springs/St. Peters church road areas. Today, St. Stephens Fire Department operates out of two stations with a total of six fire apparatus and one personnel vehicle. St. Stephens Fire Department consists of over 40 volunteer members and three full time staff during the daytime hours Monday through Friday. St. Stephens Fire Department responds to an average of over 1,000 fire and medical emergency calls per year, serves a population of over 13,000 citizens, and protects approximately 20 square miles. St. Stephens Fire Department is an active member of the Catawba County Firefighters Association, the North Carolina State Firemans Association, and the Western North Carolina State Firemans Association. St. Stephens Fire Department has also established an explorer program for young men and women ages 14-18 who are interested in the fire service as a career or to volunteer for their community. Currently there are eight active members in this program. The firefighters of the St. Stephens Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the citizens of the St. Stephens community for your support in the past and your continued support of our organization in the future.
